Name Inderal, Angilol, Apsolol, Berkolol, Betachron
Generic name Propranolol
Manufacturer Wyeth-Ayerst
First used in 1967 approved
Family Beta Blockers; Antiarrhythmic Agent (class II)
Indications Hypertension, Angina, Abnormal heart rhythms (Arrhythmias), Migraine, Stage fright and Performance anxiety

How does it work? Propranolol blocks chemicals, such as adrenaline, and prevents them from increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen use. It effectively reduces autonomic nervous system arousal (e.g. performance anxiety symptoms, palpitations, hyperventilation, sweating, pounding heartbeat, nausea, disabling tremor). Full benefits in a few hours to weeks, depending on severity of disorder.

Administration: Propranolol is available as 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, and 80 mg tablets for oral administration and as a 1 mg/ml sterile injectable solution for intravenous administration. Capsules of Propranolol for prolonged action, come as 60mg, 80mg, 90mg, 120mg, 160mg. Dosage must be determined by a physician.

Side effects: Dizziness or slight drowsiness, changes in mood, sexual side effects, trouble with sleep, worsening of asthma.

Inderal by Julie
Hi, I have been on Inderal since May 2005 - for anxiety, my script is about to run out and I thought I would check and see if there was anything else I could take - a few people have wondered why I was given Inderal in the first place.  My side affects, are still happening nonstop, anxious about everything and nothing, weird vivid dreams waking up every hour but thinking it is morning when it is only 11pm or 12pm and feeling totally exhausted - then lying in bed totally wide awake.  Shocking headaches and prior to taking this in May I would never get the headaches not as severe.  My eyes of late are burning and feel like I could pull them out of my sockets, cold feet. can never wear the right clothes because of the hot sensation, sweating nonstop.....ugh the list goes on,  if it is meant o help - why is all this happening...after reading all of your messages I am not taking my last tablets....I am going to try for something more natural - surely there is something out there than all these weird things happening!!!  Good luck to you all!   (Thu Sep 15 2:11 2005)

I have been on Inderal for about 3 Years now for panic attacks and rapid heartrate.  i really want to stop taking it.  I have tried a couple of times but my heart starts pounding and beats faster.  And it makes me feel scared and I don't want to have another panic attack.  What is the best way to stop inderal?   (Sun Aug 28 15:48 2005)

Hello Everyone,
I am hoping some of you might be able to shed some light from your experience(s). My doctor has prescribed Inderal to me for alittle over 3y now to treat Major Migraine headaches. First it was 60 mg but then he increased it after the 1st y to Inderal la 80 mg. I really hate taking this pill, I have many side effects that are "classic" for Inderal but they are tolerable due to less attacks of Migraine headaches. Since I have been on it, my blood pressure actually increased slightly and the doctor is a bit concerned since this medicines character is for lowering pressure. Maybe coincidental @ age of 32 that my genetics of highblood pressure is now starting to effect me..

OK, above is alittle history .. but the real problem is that I forgot to pick up my prescription it was going on 4 1/2 dayz and I feel very strange. Shortness of breath, chest feels heavy, insomnia, nightmares/vivid dreaming, anxious, depressed, lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous, augueda, irritable, nervous, stressed,  weak, & lethargic and my right arm is tingling constantly and woke me up out of my sleep last night. Should I be concerned I took my pill today? How long will this last to get back on track? And is this an indication of how I will feel once I am off this medicine. Has anyone screwed up the meds as i did for as long??? What happened. I don't want to call my doctor yet I am afraid I will sound paranoid.
Please help email me with your response. I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks soo much

Inderal 40 by Mem
I have been taking Inderal 40 for a few months .. I have found that nothing is happening and it doesn't seem to be working. it was prescribed to me for migraines and headaches as I have a cyst in my head and seem to suffer from headaches a lot. Does anyone else find this drug doesn't work?   (Mon Aug 15 23:26 2005)

I sympathize with those who are frightened by the experiences they have endured while taking this drug. Condemning fright only compounds the suffering.  I have taken between 20mg and 120mg of this drug to control cardiac problems brought on by chronic stress.  In have experienced toxicity symptoms that went unrecognized for years.  I finally came to the decision that I needed to start "listening" to my body and what it was trying to show me.  Symptoms of poisoning are very similar regardless of the poison.  The cost of this drug can be controlled by ordering a lower milligram (I take 2- 20mg Inderals in lieu of one 40mg and save a BUNCH on prescription cost by ordering 20mg instead of 40mg, check the savings out on your own).  I supplement my Inderal dosage with herbal preparations.  Raw garlic (2 cloves a day) keep my lungs clear and improve cardiac function.  Natural bee pollen (2 teaspoons a day) has been a God send in improving mood, energy, and stamina.  The condition of one's body varies day to day.  A 100mg dosage of Inderal may be beneficial one day and toxic the next, you must become aware of your physical reactions to this drug vs your emotional reactions to fear and panic.  Emotional reactions were controlled for me through meditation.  I was able to lower my dosage after starting mindfulness training.  I must still take Inderal, however I have been without it due to circumstances beyond my own control for more than 2 weeks.  The initial symptoms were very unplesant, however, they subsided a great deal on their own.  I would not advise anyone to stop taking Inderal cold turkey.  My brother-in-law quit taking it too quickly and had a heart attack. He does not practice stress control.  If you choose to supplement your Inderal dosage; advise your physician.  Be prepared for the reaction "it's okay by me, but it won't do any good".  They are educated in a very strict discipline with very narrow perimeters.  Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, stated "let your food be your medicine".  I agree.  For those who suffer various complications of a psychological nature, stress reduction will benefit you.  One of the first steps for me was to quit watching the evening and morning news.  An author by the name of Thich Nhat Hanh has several books that teach mindfulness training, they are available through the library and I highly recommend them.  A medical professional is well intended, but a poor substitute for spiritual peace.  We are spiritual creatures and those of us who deny this construct our own prisons through ignorance.  Contact me at silenthunder 1951@yahoo.com if I may be of any assistance.  Thanks for listening   (Mon Aug 15 19:31 2005)

Inderal LA by Harold
I have taken Inderal LA 80 for over 12 years to control severe & chronic anxiety. It works very well and I can handle nearly all situations that would have overwhelmed me previously. It has had a remarkable effect on me both behaviourally and emotionally, but it leaves me free to learn from experience. I estimate that it took about three years to resocialise myself and the learning process continues. Side effects are manageable. Initial cause of anxiety believed to be a brain injury sustained in infancy.(Fall from cot)Result continuous fear and erratic behaviour with consequent disruption to relationships and quality of life. I wish I had been diagnosed sooner but at least I can now get on with my life.    (Sun Aug 14 7:41 2005)

INDERAL by JENNY
I have just started to take inderal 80mg. once or twice a day.  i have had five spinal surgery's and have leg tremers when walking or well i can't go down stairs, my legs shake so bad i loose my balance.   they said my nevers are  find just very quick.  so far i think it is helping, but after reading all this horable side effects i am afraid what will happen.  i am on some medication for life as it is i don't want and can't afford (no prescription ins,)   (Fri Aug 5 14:24 2005)

Hi... I have been taking Inderal for the last 12 months and really want to go off this drug. However, after having read that abrupt Inderal withdrawal may lead to a cardiac problem, I am very scared to stop taking this drug. My searches for Inderal withdrawal effects led me to this site and I thought that I should share my experience with you. I will be grateful if I am informed of anything special about Inderal and how to stop taking this drug. How I started on it....I had a strange feeling of some wave like sensations in my chest region last year and went for an ECG. The GP said that ECG is having changes which terrified me ( as I had had some chest pains in the recent past and I rushed to a Cardiologist who, however, said that the ECG is within normal range and that I have had a panic attack. He prescribed 0.25mg Alprazolam (xanax). After some days I again had the same feeling and the GP incresed the Xanax to 0.25mg twice daily and added 0.60mg Inderal daily in divided doses of 0.20mg each. The medicines did not have any effect on my anxiety or chest pain and I rather became addicted to them. Over the time,I had difficulty in sleeping with a pounding heart at nights and started getting too panicky about having a heart problem. I also felt very cold this winter and the time taken for ejaculation has also reduced. Besides, there is definite memory loss and mental alertness has come down. My weight has also reduced by 7 kgs in last 12 months and I feel very weak. The weight loss may be due to the reason that I have turned teetotaller and pure vegetarian after the panic attack. I have also drastically limited intake of butter, oils and other fats. Recently after being fed up off the general deterrioration in my health, I started reducing my med. gradually. I started with 10% weekly reduction in Xanax and have reduced it to 1/4th of original dose i.e. half of 0.25 mg. Such slow withdrawal did not result in any rebounding symptoms. Similarly, over a period of 2 months, Inderal also has been reduced from 0.60mg to 0.40mg or 0.35mg daily. Now my concern is to stop this Inderal completely without any cardiac problem. I am also anxious that my BP would not have become dependent on it. Friends, please note that these medicines made me a real GAD patient and I was much better off without these.... I am Chetan from India and my email is chetandutta@rediffmail.com   (Sat Jul 30 15:39 2005)

Inderal withdrawal by terrybosworth@yahoo.com
Have been taking Inderal LA 80 mg for migraines for about 8 years!  I can't believe it!  I am a parent and a first grade teacher - lots of stress during the school year - so I have tried to wean myself off during the more relaxed summers for the past couple of years.  I have never been successful.  This summer I am determined and the first week seemed to be fine but, as usual, after a week I feel chest pressure and more migraines which includes nausea.  I usually break down and go back on them but I hope to stick with it this time and get off them completely.  Argh!  What I am most concerned about is memory loss (while taking it)!  Also, I am very sensitive to medications and nothing over the counter seems to help my migraines.  My doctor does not understand why I do not want to be addicted to a medication for these many years.  It seemed to help for a few years but I wonder if I became immune.  He wanted to increase the dose to 120 mg a few years ago (when migraines were really flaring) but I was just too sluggish and went back to the 80 mg.  I would love to get off this medication and explore other avenues for treating migraine.  It will be hard during the school year, though.  Imitrex was GREAT and really worked (nasal spray for migraine) but caused such severe heart palpitations after about the 6th time I used it I was told never to take it again.  ""Sigh""  Thanks for listening.             (Sat Jul 23 8:21 2005)

mvp by jo
I had a fit with mvp symptoms in my late 30's.  I'm now 53 and, after taking Inderol, Lopressor, Atenolol, etc... all of which made me feel like I was walking under water with cinder blocks tied to my feet, my doctor finally put me on Zebeta.  I take 1/2 of a 5 mg. tablet every day (for the past ten years) and have virtually no mvp symptoms and feel great.  The only problem I have is that I am a runner and it keeps me rather slow, but I'm still out there running 5K's.  Could be much, much worse!  Considering the options, I'd say, "Take your medicine and be thankful!"   (Thu Jul 14 14:18 2005)

I dont have high blood pressure, but I have crazy anxiety and my heart races... Is it ok to take inderal if you dont have high blood pressure??? Please answer someone... I notticed people dont really answer on here. Thanks.   (Tue Jun 28 18:55 2005)

Mom taking Inderal by Tony Diaz
Greetings,
My 81 year-old mother started taking Inderal 20mg for her heart condition and shortly after taking it she passes out completely.  Her vitals are fine, according to her Dr.  But we (our family) are having to do everything for her while she is "out for the day".

We don't like it that she so "gone" while on this madication, becasue she is still able to care for herself.

Has anyone else here experienced this type of reaction or side effect with Inderal (Propranolol 20mg)?

Please send me a note to jadiaz@myway.com. I would like to know if and/or how this problem was corrected.   (Sat Jun 25 14:09 2005)

It is clear that everybody reacts differently to propanolol. A trash for someone could be a treasure for anyone. We are all made differently..   (Fri Jun 24 16:18 2005)

i was prescribed propanolol about 6 months ago for anxiety attacks but was too scared to take them because of side effects. i am 19 and still suffering from anxiety, headaches, and fatigue, i guess i was just hoping it would all dissapear but hasnt. im thinking the only way some1 can overcome anxiety is by self control, and learning to control the anxiety, it has started to help me a little. Nevertheless i am visiting my gp tonight as i feel terribly depressed. good luck to u all x   (Thu Jun 23 11:04 2005)

propanolol by Jane Beard
I've just found this web site and am very interested to read about other experiences. I have been taking propanolol for many years, originally for panic attacks. I seem to have been left on them - no doctor has ever reviewed it as I have been diagnosed with depression since then and have gained a lot of weight. However, like many others, I do suffer form palpitations and erratic heary beats and shakiness if I am too overdue with my dose. Also, I seem to be particularly suffering in recent years with chronic fatigue, but have never linked it to this drug until some nursing friends pointed out that tiredness/sleepiness/exhaustion are well known side effects. I've been on it so long that I suppose I've almost stopped thinking about it - I've come to think of it as mediction that I must take - very much like my fluoxetine. However, I'm beginning to wonder now - should I still be on it? Can I safely come off it after all these years? I think a trip to the doctor might be appropriate. I live in England by the way.   (Wed Jun 1 19:17 2005)

Inderal by Edward
I have been taking Inderal for about 10 years for hypertension. I have white coat hypertension and anxiety. I would like to get off the drug but it is very hard. It seems the more I take of this drug the body builds up immunity and Dr.'s will just increase the dosage. For all the folks who take this drug for anxiety, take something else or get psychological help. This drug may "band-aid" the problem but over time it really isn't effective, in my opinion. Its just an easy and cost effective drug for Dr.s to prescribe.   (Mon May 30 11:37 2005)

Been taking Inderal 120LA for over ten years for High Blood Pressure.  It has worked exceptionally well for me with the exception of an occassional lack of lead in the pencil, but then I am 62 years old.  I think a lot of the concerns expressed in these posts are mostly the result of exaggerated imagination.   (Fri May 27 15:17 2005)

I've been taking 60mg of Inderal for about 4 years for high BP. The only side effects I've experienced is low sex drive, which has gotten worse over the past couple of years.  At first I thought is was just a late twenties slump. Beginning to think it is the Inderal. Also experienced fatique, and running out of breath easily.

too bad by cindy
It is a shame that people can only post questions here, there are no answers. :-(

I'm taking 80 mgs in AM for migraine prevention, high blood pressure and palpitations.  Fatigue is a problem, but I'm fighting back with increased activities, sunshine, fresh air and exercise (energy begets energy).

Inderal by Jamie
I have taken Inderal for about 8 years. I havent had major problems with it. It does calm my heart rate. That is why I take it. I take 10mg. twice a day. Lately, Ive been reading as much as I can about it, to decide to get off of it or not. I am having cold temp issues, and hair loss. Dry eye, that I thought was from Lasik, but not entirely! nausea, trouble staying asleep, low energy alot of the time, and blood sugar issues, which ive read happens. it makes your blood sugar drop, and i didnt know that before!

So Im real paranoid about getting off of the Inderal after reading you can have cardiac arrest if you quit too suddenly. I cut back my dosage by about 5mgs last week at my 4am dose. My heart was pounding and faster by about 10 points...enough to make me real panicky, because I didnt know if i was in cardiac trouble, or merely my body adjusting and my panic about it. My pharmacist assured me that it was my panic, and I should be ok at that dosage. As long as I dont just quit cold turkey, which I already knew, and am trying to be careful. I am so mad that I even have to deal with this as an issue. I didnt have heart problems before I started taking it...and I hope I dont now. But how can I tell, ya know? I dont have the money to run to the dr. everytime I have a rapid heartbeat, for reassurance. But since I really dont know whats going on in there, I tend to panic, being prone to panic attacks anyway. I have a BP machine to check things and I can keep track of things.

My heartbeat tends to beat harder and faster when I lay down to try to sleep it away, for some reason. My husband says its because Im laying there thinking about it. could be. i have ocd, so im a thinker.

someone on here said she took another drug to get off of the inderal...man I hope it doesnt come to that. I am going to try this week, to take a few mgs less, and try to cope with the racing heart (makes it beat faster writing this!), and see.

My legs have been aching these past few days and I have been so scared of some freaky circulatory side effect. see? panicky person. ugh! the pharmacist said that the circulation should be better without the inderal because it slows the blood down and everything, so...

my email is babytibbs@hotmail.com if anyone has any information on how they got off of inderal, and how long and if they have faster heart rates after getting away from it than they did before they even started it. if they can get away from it. that sucks! i also take xanax as needed. i dont want to have to take more of that. but i had to the other night to knock my butt out, after the lighter inderal dosage and i got scared. =\    (Mon Apr 18 1:10 2005)

took propranolol for 3 mnth after suffering a serious of scary panic attack. had never expererince them b4 so thought it was the usual- heart attack etc etc. $20k
of medical checks later and i was diagnosed with axiety and slight depression by a $100 an hour shrink...  i'll do it in reverse in my next life. i'm sure...
my symptons could come on at any time..  mostly rapid heart beat would panic me and i'd go from there.. sometimes i struggled to breathe.. chest pain  the works...  take a xanax doesnt quite cut it.. doeant stop the heart palpatations which usually et me off..  so propranolol really helps this..
i rarely get anxious while on it.. if i do then add a xanax and its pretty sorted.. or just go asleep and usually wake up feeling better...  stopped taking it after 4 mths  and had a few tough days...  then had a great month.. back to the gym running out socialising and being normal.. but then i got a chest infection and all these symptoms reappeared...  so back on 40 mg a day for the moment and i found a $55  an hour shrink..  gonna go off it again in a month  and see how it goes...  drug free by the summer...     (Thu Apr 14 14:01 2005)

inderal by happuch
Hi.I was dignosed with nodular nontoxic goiter and had a lobectomy a month ago. I also have MVP. I started taking inderal 10mg twice a day when I was dignosed with goiter for palpitations and anxiety and until now I am taking it with 5mg every other day. I am planning to stop taking it as was advised by my physician...But I am still experiencing anxiety attack... like I feel afraid in which I normally don't have those feelings before. I also have this difficulty of breathing when I am being attack. My BP now is 90/60 and a pulse rate of 60 to 65 beats per minute. Yes... I also experiencing fatigue. I just hope to have those feelings when I wasn't dignosed with goiter.

Hi. I started taking Propanolol nearly 1 month ago and at the moment my headaches have reduced slightly and i am not as anxious. The doctoe said if i feel the need i can up my tabs to 2x10mg a day at the moment i am taking 1 on a morning with an aspirin.   (Fri Apr 1 10:26 2005)

have been on propranolol/inderal 80 mg time release for severe situational anxiety/panic attacks...no side effects whatsoever...feel like this is the only medicine that has worked at all...highly reccomend it to all anxiety sufferers...take at night before bedtime and it peaks at 10:00 am the next day.

The nursing home where my 71 yr old mom went for short term rehabilitation has increased her from 80 mg a day of Inderal LA to 240mg a day.  She gets dizzy, has bad headaches, is weak and shaky, nauseous, is either falling asleep or has insomnia, gets crazy dreams, gets agitated easily, has paranoid ideas, is forgetful and often confused.  To solve this they lied and tried to get her to take a "happy pill" called Lexapro saying it was another blood pressure pill.

Inderal withdrawal by Christine
After taking inderal for 6+ years, my dr. had me stop taking it when I had the flu, several weeks ago.  I felt like I was withdrawing from narcotics, and ended up in the hospital (they put me in for 'depression').  Things got better when the drs. put me back on Inderal....but no one admits to the connection. Any similar stories? My email: chrismurphy1031@hotmail.com
   (Sat Mar 19 8:56 2005)

My doctor has advised me to stop taking inderal cold turkey.  I've only been taking it for 2 weeks for rapid heartbeat, but couldn't tolerate the side effects-extreme fatigue, etc.  I realize that stopping the drug suddenly can increase the original symptoms, but does anybody know how long it will be before this increase moderates?  thanks.   (Tue Mar 15 13:03 2005)

Inderal by Jason
I have been taking Inderal for four years now. It was prescribed for palputations and it works. Right now I am taking 80mg per day, but have been up to 120mg per day. I also take other meds because of a lifetime battle with panic attacks. I have gained almost 40lbs. and find it very hard to lose the weight. The longer in the day I wait to take it the worse I feel. Rapid heart beat and the shakes are just a couple of problems I have when I don't take it right on time. I just hope I dont have to take this med forever.   (Wed Feb 23 20:58 2005)

Clearly some of you people should be on anti-psychotics. Most of these side effects are self perpetuated. Propanolol has been around for many many years.

"I have a heart attack if I forget to take them" ...please.

Hi, I'm 20 and i've been taking antidepressents for almost 1 year now and have felt happier but i have no had any relief from my anxiety! The main reason i am supposed to be taking medication. So After prozac and dosulepin, my doctor has just prescribed me a 80MG dose of this drug. I really want to feel normal. My anxiety is ruining my life and interfering with me getting to work, my doctor says that i may be agoraphobic. Anyway, i wanted to ask, does anyone know how quickly this drug will take effect. I don't want to be waiting two weeks for it too kick in as i need help with my anxiety now. I took it an 2 hours ago and i feel calmer now, but it may just be that i would have felt like this anyway.

Please let me know, Janey   (Mon Feb 14 13:46 2005)

Hi jbouz! If you read the potential side effects of any drug or medication, then you would probably be put off from taking even over the counter drugs! Inderal is actually a commonly prescribed drug which rarely causes any serious problems! If you do decide to take your beta blockers, just be aware of any unusual & persistent symptoms & report them to your doctor! Unless you have suffered from hypotension (low blood pressure), bradycardia (slow heart rate),ashma or heart failure, in which case i advise you speak with your doctor again first, before taking this drug.   (Tue Nov 23 17:56 2004)

Hi Everyone, i have just read through all of your posts & i would just like to inform you that, yes, propranolol hyrochloride can cause unwanted side effects such as dizziness, nausea, light headedness, mood swings, lethargy, nightmares & vivid dreams, weight gain & more difficulty breathing! None of these side effects are uncommon & are usually harmless; however, if they are persistent, troublesome or severe, i do advice you see your doctor as your dose may need to be lowered.   (Tue Nov 23 17:39 2004)

I have been using propanolol for anxiety reduction and only when giving a speech or presentation.  I use it perhaps once or twice a year with great results.  I usually take 20 mg about 40 minutes before I'm expected to speak and it works like a charm with no significant side effects.  I do feel a bit sleepy after the fact but far better to perform or speak well and in control and deal with a touch of sleepiness.

Good sex can solve all these problems.
Besides, its cheaper and doesn't have all the side effects.  Also, it doesn't make your doctor or the drug companies rich, so don't expect them to recommend it.

I just want you all to know how dangerous Propanolol can be. My beautiful cousin Karen who was only 31 DIED in April from Propanolol Toxicity (i have just received the autopsy report).

Please all of you read the contra-indications and the side effects of this drug. If you don't have them go to the drugstore/chemist and ask for a print out. I am most alarmed at reading some of your posts as some of the symptoms people are describing are what Karen described to me 2 weeks before she collapsed.

For Karen her migraines became much worse and she was having abdominal cramping, anxiety, extreme lethargy and insomnia and when she did dream she was having really vivid, bad dreams. She said she just felt so generally unwell that she thought she was going to die because she had been to the doctor and had tests and they couln't  figure out what was causing it (VERY obvious in hindsight).

Don't rely on doctors to know everything because a lot of her side effect symptoms she was already experiencing from other medical problems so they just put it down to that. Please make sure you are monitored while taking this drug and be careful what dosage you take.

Hi, I have been on Propanolol for 6 months, and just recently reduced my dosage from 20 mg to 15, and then starting getting panick attacks again, so went back to 20 twice a day, which then made it even worse, now only taking 20 a day...I have been to the ER twice and am scared why I keep feeling like I have a huge rubber band around my head. It sucks. Any help, ideas??? I keep thinking I am having a heart attack, it feels like low blood pressure/dizziness majorily, especially when I am sleeping, it wakes me up...help

I'm not sure what to expect. 4 weeks ago my DR changed by BP meds to Dyazide. 2 weeks ago I had an "episode", and had tremors since. Went to DR last week,BP and pulse very high.He added Avapro as secondary BP. He sent me to neurologist who ordered CT scan and put me on Xanax and Zoloft, and scheduled a stress echo cardiogram. Blood results came in with severe hyperthyroidism, added Inderal LA to the other drugs, and I am now trying to find a good endocrinologist.

I have a severe case of stagefright and have been prescribed propanolol (20mg tablets) by my doctor.  However, he simply said "use as needed".  Any thoughts on dosage? I'd really like to maximize the dose but want to be careful....It's my understanding that they do not have to be taken every day, just when needed.  Any advice or similar stories would be appreciated!!   (Wed Sep 15 22:11 2004)
